Who doesn’t just love the 4th of July? There are so many things to celebrate! The birth of our great country…a day off work…the balmy weather at the start of summer. But as we know, national holidays can be triggers for folks in recovery. There’s food and drink and overindulgence everywhere. But there are tons of ways to celebrate Independence Day and still maintain sobriety.

Go to a Marathon Meeting
For the newly sober there are so many triggers around during the holidays. If you are looking for a safe haven, a marathon meeting at your local AA/NA might be just the place. Marathon meetings are day-long meetings and sometimes even include a group meal and/or sober party. Check in with the AA online and/or NA online for meeting times and locations near you.

Become a Creative Host
Hosting your own BBQ or patio party allows you ultimate input and control over the experience, menu and guest list. So let your creative juices flow! You could do a potluck, pig roast or even a clam bake! For some unique N/A beverage ideas, check out the huge recipe collection in our Mocktails board on Pinterest.

Become One with Nature
Almost everyone in the country lives near a great walking or hiking trail! Hiking is amazing exercise and can be very calming. Connect with nature, enjoy peaceful silence, and explore the land in its natural state—how our forefathers likely experienced it.

Take a Step Back in History
Independence Day an important day in our nation’s history, so why not do something that gives you a peak into history. Are there historic sites near you that you haven’t yet explored? How about National Parks, museums, or monuments? Learning is fun!

Become a Beach Bum
Whether its action or peace and quiet that you are after, the beach is the place to be! Grab a towel and get some sun, go surfing or dive into a good new book. Or try something new and adventurous like paddle boarding, kite surfing or snorkeling. Revive your inner kid and construct an epic sandcastle.

Explore Your ‘Wild’ Side
There’s no place like a zoo! Fresh air, some easy strolling, and some furry fun for all ages. The local zoo or aquarium offers good, wholesome, family fun that weeds out the usual “partiers” that can encourage triggers.

What are some other ideas for a sober holiday celebration?
